<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Maryan is Rahman uninhibited! I mean when Rahman is not constraint tightly to the medium - the masala movie. Though the songs are woven around the theme of the movie, it is not restricting him much. And the surprise element is Rahman is contributing to the lyrics department too :) Though I see his name on the Satyameva Jayte credits as writer, for a movie, it was a pleasant surprise. And man, the songs he co-written are awesome! Let's listen to the songs one by one...

1. Nenjae Ezhu

Lyrics : Kutti Revathi, A. R. Rahman
Singer : A. R. Rahman

Rahman show. In every bit of it. I found myself sings with the chorus at the first time itself... That is something, especially when the song is not made into a generic format. It is really a mood lifting song and no way one can ignore it. Definitely to stay in the playlist for a long time.

2. Innum Konjam
Lyrics : Kabilan, A. R. Rahman
Singers : Vijay Prakash, Swetha Mohan

If you liked Moongil Thottam from Kadal, this will take you to the next step of its mood. The cute, naughty, jovial song is for all the lovers our there :) And Rahman gives his writing arm on this too.. Hhmm...

3. Naetru Aval
Lyrics : Vaali
Singers : Vijay Prakash, Chinmayee

Adiye, was the special song in Kadal and it is Neatru Aval for Maryan. It is different from what you heard before. I mean the treatment. And yes, Chinmayee proved her might once more. When she whispers the song, it definitely will make you glued to it...

4. Sonapareeya
Lyrics : Vaali (Rap lyrics: Sofia Ashraf)
Singers : Javed Ali, Haricharan, Nakash Aziz

The celebration song. And it is for everyone. It was my 4 year old cousin's turn to sing with the chorus at the first time with this :) He can not stop singing Ole Oyyale... Instant hit.

5. Enga Pona Raasaa
Lyrics : Kutti Revathi, A. R. Rahman
Singer : Shakthisree Gopalan

How can the dreamy, sleepy, dusky voice be used differently... If Nenjukkulle was a surprise use of Shakthisree Gopalan, this proves that she is no one-piece wonder. This song is especially liked in my lone drive :) Come fall in Love with this song.

6. I Love My Africa
Lyrics : Brian Kabwe, Blaaze
Singers : A. R. Rahman, Blaaze, Madras Youth Choir

This is directly from OST. I liked the sound of it. The wild beats. What more can I say about it !

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">7. Kadal Raasa Naan
Lyrics : Dhanush
Singer : Yuvan Shankar Raja

Is it the same guy who penned Kolaveri Di ? Or is it the singer surprised more ??? Yuvan Shankar Raja for Rahman. And it shows. A different song and surprisingly soulful lines by Dhanush. Though the Komban Sura lines been a bit egoistic, a bit into the song and it translates into the fragile guys song.

Altogether, it is an album going to stay in my playlist for a while. Well, it doesn't mean I am going to remove Kadal, this will play along with it. And Raanjhanaa, Rahmanji, I can not ask too many boons from you so quickly :) And I am not complaining....

Director : Mani Ratnam

Magic happens whenever A R Rahman joins hands with Mani Ratnam. I think there is more than harmony, understanding, freedom and all. They make music FOR the movie. Its story, its soul in mind. Rather than a defined prescription – one shava shava song, one drama song, one patriotic etc. And it shows. If the soundtrack has so much to tell about the movie, what will be there in the movie Mani Ratnam picturise… Let us go to the music for the time being :)

01 - Chithirai Nela - Vijay Yesudas

This is the opening track. Introduction to Kadal, and it opens with a baby wakes up crying… Wow… The song is presented with very less instruments and when they are in, they keep a low, soothing tone. May be that’s the best way to give us the musical experience of Kadal… Vijay Yesudas has sung it so smooth and low that it justifies the idea and a completely new him sounds in it.

02 - Adiye - Sid Sriram

The freshness of Kadal is not limited to the way the music made. The singers, most of them fresh to Rahman, gives it a new feel. Sid Sriram sounds so fresh and his style has a rare depth and high! And the kept-low background and chorus makes it shine better. Can it be called a jazz or blues style – I don’t know. But this is the kind of song you will repeat in your headphone. The chorus is going to stick on your tongue – Adiye Adiye, Ennai Enge Nee Kootti Porai..

03 - Moongil Thottam - Abhay Jodhpurkar, Harini

The songs in this album made to touch soul than ears! This song emphasizes it again. This is the first time I hear or at least notice Abhay and his voice is just fine for this song. Harini, just done another of her best song with Rahman, and her voice presentation is so different that you need to read it to believe it is her! Ithu Pothum Enakku, Ithu Pothume, Verenna Venam, Nee Pothume…

Click here for the Lyrics and English Translation of the song

04 - Elay Keechaan - A.R. Rahman

Well, this singer sounds familiar! I think it is a kind of funny song with a pleasant and kind of naughty tune. Though I didn’t get most of the words, I liked the way they rhymed !

05 - Nenjukkulle - Shakthisree Gopalan, A.R. Rahman

The star comes at no.5 ! When I heard it at the first time at MTV Unplugged, it got all my attention at once. We reached the channel just as the song started and I was not able to catch the introduction. For someone who claims to know every song ( Hindi and Tamil at least ) of him, it was a surprise. I tried to Google the lyrics and was disappointed. Then I heard about it – in news… that it is going to be a viral hit and all… Compared to the unplugged version, this has added sounds, of instruments and Rahman’s humming (?). Makes it sound fresh. Though keep the unplugged for the luxury of the feeling of her singing only for you ;)

When they tell a story about Kadal, how a song to God can be omitted… This is it. Or at least that is what I got from the lyrics!

Theme music. This time the mood changes to heavy, strong, intense one. Interestingly there is a whole one minute silence in the track. And Rahman acknowledges it in his twitter page. Here comes a man who does not believe, with delivery his responsibility ends... Thanks for being the role model again Rahman...

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Directed by : Nora Ephron
Studio : Warner Bros.
Starring : Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan

Well, this is fairly an old movie. I mean, released in 1998 makes it a good 14 years old. To me, the movie is more clearer and close to life now! When I watched it during engineering, email was very new thing and the ‘expensive’ dial-up browsing was so rationed that having a chat friend or, even visiting a chatroom was a remote possibility. Later, once it becomes less expensive and I got more of it, I too had my share of cyber friends, so much that I got enough things to put in a story ;)

It is not anonymous cyber friends who made me glued to mail. My Love and I used to send quite a few ( which continues after marriage for good, I mean, a lot of things are better explained in writing! ).

There is a charm in the anonymous cyber friend mails. The charm which didn’t lose even after meeting in person. On the other and,
this not knowing has its charms too. Just like the characters of the movie realizes. Can be open, confident and with no strings attached. If the other leaves you seeing your true colour, just let him go, and look for another. The chance of meeting again is so less and there is hardly any baggage left :) How easy it is to open up to a faceless friend ;)

Or it could be warm, close friendship which means a lot. Like, sharing the deepest fear. Never being shy to ask for help or suggestions when needed. Not seeing face to face means, we can be ourselves without bothering about how the other reacts to our body language or expressions! Well, if you are not video chatting!

Without knowing the person personally (!) being able to connect, advice, listen, build friendship… I like the way Kathleen was able to overcome being tongue-tied when she is provoked. She keeps thinking, what she should have told then, at the right moment… Unknowingly and unintentionally Joe help her grow out of it. Growing up personally too – through the cyber friend ;) I like it. I like the way their friendship grow that, by the end of the movie Kathleen so wanted the anonymous chat friend to be Joe..

This is for the ones who wait impatiently as their computer connects, go online , breath catches in the chest until they hear three little words: "You've got mail"

<div style="color: #0c343d; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">
The story may be about split personality or the agony and tragedy of a perfectionist or the story of a girl who fight against all odds to prove herself. I got another viewpoint about the movie. The stress and pain one goes through at work!

Black Swan is about the story of Nina who dreams about making big in ballet. Her dream comes true ( almost ) when she got the opportunity to portray the role of the Swan Queen. The role got both shade of a person - innocent, vulnerable White Swan and the sensual, bold Black Swan. While Nina is a natural being White, Black is something she needs to find.

The director of the ballet, Thomas has a choice for Black - Lily. Whom he wants Nina to outshone, to prove that she is the better choice. Poor Nina works all night all day, even in dreams, to emulate it. In the end - though she succeeds in a terrific performance, she lost herself.

Remember the cartoon where a cock lay an egg a day in fear of appraisals and the manager expected it to lay two eggs... The movie, I will say, got such a theme, but based on human with an artistic background. The boss who 'pushes you to break the envelope', or the peer pressure, or simply the need to prove oneself when the pride is been questioned... Everybody might have faced it. It all depends how long and how much one care to take it to...

There is one scene when Nina dance late to night and the pianist walk out saying he got a life. Nina still wanted to practice. Begging him to stay. For her, life and the dance was no two. Obsessed with work ( even though it might be on art ). And that ruined her.

In the movie the director wanted Nina to stop being a perfectionist and lose herself in the role. Interestingly in the time management course in my company also encourage us not to be a perfectionist! The work may need only 80% perfection and if you want to make it 100, you might be wasting a lot of time and effort, which may not add value to it! Strange corporates... In the movie too, the director was more worried about the company. Nina was to replace an established, talented dancer. For him, as long as Nina does the job good, he will be happy. And in case Nina fails, he got back-up. Business first...

Well, these was the things came to my mind watching the movie. It was nice one. What the director wanted to tell, he told it well. We will be touched and disturbed by Nina's tragedy. Too bad she didn't read the signs or there was nobody to stop her from her fate...

It's been long since I wrote anything on these pages. Life kept me busy. :)However, I couldn't help find a few minutes to write about this well-made film "Kahaani".

IF you haven't seen it yet, you are missing on a very well- made Bollywood thriller. Mark my words. This movie has an attention grabbing script. And well chosen characters.

I wouldn't be a spoilsport and tell you the story here. Vidya Balan gels into the character so much so that in the end she will give you a shock! As you watch the movie, you will realize that every character is made for the actor chosen. You will be hooked to the screen throughout the movie. And hold your breath when the intermission flashes on screen. :P

There is more than meets the eye! Kolkata is beautifully picturised and the city blends into the story.

Amitabh Bachchan's rendering of "Eklo cholo re" is amazing. A song that suits his personal and poetic sensibility.

To sum up, it's very refreshing to realise that Bollywood is attempting to film suspense thrillers in different style.

We got expectations about every product, every movie. When it is an Imtiaz Ali movie, we naturally expect it to be cute and simple. Though the music and trailers hint us to think the other way, how much did we change the perception... When Rockstar audio was released, many turned it down saying it was not good. When something is offered very new, it will need some time to sink with the audience. Now when the songs been repeated in TV, they became everyone's favorite. Movie also could be hit by the same view. Audience was not expecting something like this from Imtiaz. For the Junglee Jawani kind of scenes they were cheering. When Janardhan was playing around foolishly in the beginning, they liked it. But when Jordan was going through trauma, they were bored and commenting not again, yeh banda kya kar raha hein etc. Unfortunately, movie will not get the luxury of another look like the audio had...

The movie started like any other Imtiaz movie. Frankly I doubt why the opening of his movie has to be confusing. When I watched Jab We Met for the first time, I was surprised why Shahid was behaving odd and attended a marriage. It took up to the 'Hotel Decent' scene to understand that his lady broke up with him and it was her marriage he attended. May be me, the poor cinema literate to be blamed. Here in Rockstar the beginning was not very smooth, it did take time to understand where the story is and it was bouncing between present, past and in between at random. It will certainly not help the audience to connect with Jordan's trauma.

Imtiaz has teased the general perceptions a lot in the movie. Like 'Taklif nahi hai tho insaan bada nahi hota' or 'pyar nahi kiya tho kalakar nahi banta'. The little exposed to life and trauma Janardhan, therefore started looking for 'dil thodne ka machine' to make himself an artist. Because he was told that only trauma can make a good artist !

A R Rahman's music and Ranbir Kapoor's performance are the highlight of the movie. I counted Rahman first because, his music gels so well with the movie that we think Imtiaz made his movie around it and not the other way ! And the lyrics by Irshad Kamil completes it. Whether it is the high voltage Sadda Haq or soothing Tum Ho, he did a fabulous job there. Ranbir was fantastic. The foolish, joker Janardhan and the intense Jordan - both were safe in his hands. His expression in the songs ‘Sadda Haq’ and ‘Naadaan Parindey’ is superb. Imran Khan should learn from him how to pick the right movies. Uncle Aamir can not make enough movies to retain him in the industry !

One big disappointment - Nargiz Fakhri. She is good on posters but when it come to acting, she is unbearable most of the time. Especially when she decide to make her lips and eyes act, and unfortunately she did that too often :( The only scene you might like her might be the one in which she was in coma !

Together, Imtiaz made the movie he believed in. Rahman and Ranbir gave what he wanted. But that didn't make it a good one. Imtiaz should have been a little more careful and planned about the editing and treatment may be. His writing is very good. The short, crisp dialogues prove it. His characters have soul. The canteen guy or the music company owner or his chamcha, everybody is written and executed well. If the story was more linear than moving back and forth in time, it would have been nicer, especially it was presented as the story of intense, emotional Jordan. I liked the movie. May be a second watch I might like it more, as it happened with Imtiaz's early ones.

<div style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">When a director knows what he wants and a musician who can give it come together, we expect nothing less than a classic, and that is what Rockstar delivers. With Irshad Kamil's deep, thoughtful poems add to it, the experience becomes magical. First thing first - Thank you A R Rahman for not making this sound like another Bon Jovi album! From the first song you will be hooked to a musical journey, fresh and different. The songs are so fresh ( both in sound, and rendering ) that first time, there is a big chance that it might let you down. But for Rahman fans this is a treat. Because they know that the guy is going to deliver something different and like slow poison, this is going to infect each and every soul listen to it... Let's listen to the songs now ::
<div style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">

"Phir Se Ud Chala" Mohit Chauhan
The opening track. There is no chorus and no repeating verses. It is like a smooth flow with mellow music. Mohit Chauhan got the opportunity to flex his singing muscles and he excellently used it. Great start of an exceptional journey :)
<div style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
"Jo Bhi Main" Mohit Chauhan
Rockstar needs a song to perform live. This is it. I liked the chorus Yeh Yeh Yah... The lyrics are superb. Jo Bhi Main Kehna Chaahoon Barbaad Karen Alfaaz Mere. Ideas lost when expressed by words. Wow ! And such a careless, lost singing by Mohit. My pick of the album.
<div style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
"Katiya Karun" Harshdeep Kaur (Additional Vocals: Sapna Awasthi)
A folk song is a must for an Imtiaz Ali movie, which always have its feet on ground. And Rahman doesn't disappoint us here. This album has many flavours and spices. A feast, not a quick bite. This is the folk part.

"Kun Faya Kun" A. R. Rahman, Javed Ali, Mohit Chauhan
The Sufi song. I like Rahman's Sufi style in Piya Haaji Ali and Khwaja Mera Khwaja. This one too lives up to his reputation. I like Rahman sings Sufi style. This is a soothing experience and a short break before the upcoming guitars :)

"Sheher Mein" Mohit Chauhan, Karthik
A funny song. Light lines and mood. The track and real mock is nice. Nothing much to talk about. Just an easy going song.
<div style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">"Hawaa Hawaa" Mohit Chauhan (Additional Vocals: Viviane Chaix, Tanvi Shah, Suvi Suresh, Shalini)
We have seen road movies and this is a road song! Wandering like the wind. Roaming free. Not bound by words or languages. A lot of blabbering makes this a complete carefree experience. Chik chik chik... Pa pa paun... This is a song going to remain in your lips for a while at least...

"Aur Ho" Mohit Chauhan, Alma Ferovic
Though this album belongs to Rahman, one thing adds to the experience is Irshad Kamil's lines. Iss Lamhe Kya Kar Doon Main Jo Mujhe Chain Mile Na Aaram Mile... Can not think of better words for a song about confusion. The violin and Mohit's tender voice completes the mood, gracefully.

"Tango For Taj" Instrumental
Instrumental track. Something we are going to listen repeatedly. Or to dance with.

"Tum Ko" Kavita Subramaniam
The only song for the lady. It feels nice to hear Kavita after a long time. The deep emotional poem is well complimented by her voice. The violin is excellent. But this song belongs to Kavita.

"The Dichotomy of Fame" feat. Balesh on Shehnai & Kabuli on Guitars
Never heard shehnai blends with guitar before. And it gels perfectly. You will be lost in two minutes of bliss...

"Nadaan Parinde" A. R. Rahman, Mohit Chauhan
A rock song doesn't always need a reason. I mean, it doesn't need to be a love song, melody, ballad or sad one. This one song talks of the wandering soul missing home. But it is not as emotionally filled as 'Lukka Chupi' from Rang De Basanti either. An easy going song with wonderful guitar solo.

"Tum Ho" Mohit Chauhan, Suzanne D'Mello
A melody filled with emotions. Which grows inside with every time you listen to it. Suzanne's humming blends well with the mood. Nice song, which is going to last long in your playlist.

"Saadda Haq" Mohit Chauhan feat. Orianthi on Guitars (Choral Vocal Arrangements by Clinton Cerejo)
The rebel anthem. Angry guitar. Angry lines. Angry chorus. That's it ! It is rare to have Hindi songs dealing with anger. This is a cry of a generation ( rebel ) who wants their right to be served, no matter what. Kyun Sach Ka Sabak Sikhaye / Jab Sach Sunn Bhi Na Paaye / Sach Koi Bole To Tu / Niyam Kaanoon Bataye. Do I need to tell more ???

"Meeting Place" (Based on a Poem by Rumi) Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir is an intelligent actor, who improves with each movie. If this, a little more than a minute piece attracts you , it is because of the perfect modulation in his voice. He did complete justice to the wonderful verse. And a grand end to the album :)
A plain movie one can relate to or the life one wants to live - a dream kind of life.

For arguing you can say it is old wine in new bottle. Dil Chahta Hai deals with friendship, misunderstanding, making-up and the resolution to stay best friends forever. Rock-On repeated it with a rock band backdrop and here in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, it was once again with the bachelor party ( or tour ) background. BUT the movie offers much more than this. Or it is giving a fresh angle to it. Whatever it might be you will be entertained every minute of it.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #20124d; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">

Or you can say it is just giving advices : the need to live and not earn, don't spend today planning for the life after retirement, find happiness in simple things, live the life that you want, money is not everything etc. But then, I am sure Zoya has lectured them all, without making us feel being taught ! That is an excellent thing.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #20124d; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">

It is the story of 3 friends from school-age, going for the trip in Spain for the bachelor party. ( Don't know why movies suggest there is no fun after marriage and bachelor party is the last available opportunity for it. Is it true ? ). In the course, they discovers what they want from life, patches up some difference they had for years, met one's never-met-before biological father, discovers Love, and the friendship. Each plans one adventure each and with each of them, they feel and know life better. ( another not-planned 'tomato-holy' one is also there, which end up funny ( and shocking at once ) than life discovery ). And with each passing moment and events they realise how much they need each other to feel complete and they decide to live life fully, the way they wanted.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #20124d; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">

The friends are awesome. Three Musketeers - as they were called at school. Their pranks, pulling each other, don't care attitude will sure entertain. Hrithik, Abhay and Farhan were the perfect choice for the roles ( they convince it with ease ). The ladies also did good job. Katrina can justify her accent for being half - American :)
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #20124d; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">

Though music disappointed, the background score or the lack of it excels. The high emotions scenes didn't have any background music ( like when Imran meets his father, all we hear in the backdrop is his breaths ). It helps to sink in the mood better and it was more life-like than being dramatic. Not only horror movies can use silence for good.

<div style="color: #20124d; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
One thing you can not stop noticing is the number of brands the movie endorses. There is a quite handful of logos appear in the beginning and dear Zoya gave everyone its share, from Land Rover to Royal Enfield ( in Spain ? ).

<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #20124d; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">It's a movie to watch. Anyway it does not resemble our lifestyle - as my friend told me. Well, who wants to see the real, slice of life in every movie. At times the stories on life of super privileged won't hurt. When the movie was over, one guy from the audience was shouting 'Haan, mein zinda hoon'. Zoya would have been happy to hear that :)
<div style="color: #20124d; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">

I will definitely recommend this movie. At times an escape like this from the daily routine life is relieving, if not refreshing.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-78590305191405252002011-04-17T15:11:00.004+05:302011-12-21T09:19:36.728+05:30Rio - As I See It

Directed by : Carlos Saldanha

The biggest attraction of this movie was that it is from the makers of Ice Age ( not withstanding the colourful world of birds ). After the third edition of the series, I became a huge fan of them. It was the first animation film I ever watched in theater and I thoroughly enjoyed it. After watching Rio, I felt regret for taking the Ice Age baggage…

The movie is colourful, simple, neat, witty, engaging. Not a great entertainer though. The emotional content ( something new age animation movies beautifully portray ) is shallow. The humour make you smile, but hardly makes you laugh out loud. Ice Age 3, the whole theater was enjoying the wits with loud laughs and the twists with oohhs and nooos. Here…

The voice characters of the movie is fantastic, especially Jesse Eisenberg as the metro-stupid Blu. His voice modulation helps the character a lot to paint its happy with the secure life he was granted, and never ever regrets for not to learn flying. ( his tries to learn flying is fantastic. You might have seen characters in real life that goes by theories than with the practicality ). The emotions, bonding, friendship, evil never wins story for kids – that part this movie scores. It will be definitely an interesting entertainment for kids. And for adults, if not expecting the Ice Age magic, can leave the theater happy.

My suggestion : For this vacation season it is a good time out. Kids will like the colourful world of the winged friends. They might get to learn a thing or two unknowingly ( something Finding Nemo scores high on ). The music is good. A worthy flight over the forest / carnival at Rio de Janeiro.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-86692095999007274972011-02-05T00:09:00.003+05:302011-12-21T09:19:50.260+05:30Dhobi Ghat ( Mumbai Diaries ) - As I See It

Direction : Kiran Rao

Cast : Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, Kriti Malhotra

Banner : Aamir Khan Productions

Curiosity can kill a cat. And too much of curiosity - it can make the cat curse the reason it got killed !

Well, this is what I felt after watching Dhobi Ghat – Mumbai Diaries. If Aamir Khan was not associated / promoted the movie, then there will be nobody out of the Film Festival circuit might have seen this movie. But Aamir being a part of it, or this is the debut of his wife as director will not make the movie good. Though that can be a good reason to build up hype and sell it.

I finished it with mixed feeling. I won’t say it is bad, though I will not suggest you to watch it either. I like the way she shoot it. The camera angles look fresh and good. And her eye for the details is interesting. Only complaint is, if she had a better script or story to work on…

One very evident thing is she was so much pre-occupied with the laws of cross-over new generation cinema. We have seen numerous Indian movies made in English. And the first thing common to every one of it – yes, the background score. Film makers never dared to use anything other than Veena and Sitar. Here Kiran, being different, is using guitar, which made to sound like Veena / Sitar ( I might be wrong about the instrument, but the sound is very similar! ). Plus occasional seasoning of the folk / classical songs. Bingo ! When will we grow up… Another trick she uses is few profanity ( you see, today’s youth use them often. Even Aamir was made to use the f-word! ) And being bold and new generation writer she liberates her lady by making her confess she had a lovely time with the man the other night. How clever…

There are two ladies in the movie who tried to see / show Mumbai through camera. One with photos and the other video. Though what they say is different, I liked the way it was presented. I am sure the audience would have lost the count of stories the rich girl falls for the innocent, frank boy. Here, there is a twist, and I will not spoil your movie, go watch yourself. After Slum dog Millionaire, I guess the slums and galis of Mumbai is hot selling thing for film makers. Hope it will not continue.

Kiran was very clear about this movie. What she wants to say and more importantly what and who she is targeting. And with the awards and recognisation (?) it received, she can be called a winner. Dear, be extra cautious next time, you may not land lucky. Good Luck.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-3575866490714803372010-11-06T12:22:00.004+05:302011-12-21T09:20:05.045+05:30Toy Story 3 - As I See It

<div style="color: #990000; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Directed by Lee Unkrich

Remember the first of Toy Story movies ? Which made us take notice of the world we never thought of existed (!!??) - The world of toys ! How eagerly they were waiting to be played by kids. Their anxiousness when a new toy comes to house. Fearing whether it will replace their place in Andy’s favorite list… Be happy when the new one makes friends with the existing ones, and Andy adds the new one to his play rather than replacing it for the old ones.

The third season starts with the playtime. Little Andy’s ‘adventures’. By the time the credit ends, it takes Woody and gang to a totally different situation. Andy is going to college. He has grown up. Grown too much to play with them anymore. He needs to move on. Trash, donate to a day-care center or move to attic. Andy has to decide what the future of his playmates is.

That was the moment. We have seen / heard parents find it hard to accept the kids growing up. The way their priorities change. They no more need parents in every step. They are growing up, growing out of parents lap. They are no more vulnerable or total helpless without parents. When they need to move out of home for studies / job... for parents it’s a world that been separated front hem. Something they were so adorned and cherished all the way…

Have you imagined ever the way the toys feels... They were not played with for years. They were abandoned, no more adorned. They were world to the kid earlier, now space eating rubbish. Man, that’s not fair! But that’s the way life is. Heard about the options for their future, one toy even wonders they will be kept safe so that they can play with Andy’s kids! They are doing their best to show their presence to Andy. But he is too big to even notice them. Though his mom suggests him to trash the toys, he wanted to keep them in attic. But life got some other plans and the toys ends up in daycare. ( for how watch the movie ;) )

The toys which were all excited to go to daycare to play with, finds the life is not easy there. The senior toys put them in little kid’s room, where they are ill treated. Woody, like always, wants and tries to help the lot and rescue them. But nobody believes him. Even Buzz. By the time they find out the truth, it was late.

Well, that’s more like a real life story than the toy story. At least once, we were so preoccupied by our assumption that we didn’t believe a friend, or prefer to believe what we think easy than the reality which though true, but unreal! And with some dirty soul who wants to use us or the circumstances manipulate us to his favour… May be we not are lucky to have a friend like Woody, who will never give up on friends, or not just plain lucky to realize we are being used… We need to better take a minute before the tough decision to etch in our mind. Anyway in the movie, Woody manages to rescue them and they were all back to Andy. The thing that makes Woody special is that he will never give up on you, ever.

Before leaving college, Andy finds a kid who is good with toys, Bony. Not sure whether the toys or Andy or us were more relieved to see the toys in safe hands.

Like any other Pixar movie, this also has an imaginative story line. Which is appealing not only for kids, but for the kids in adults too. It reminds me of my younger days. When I used to play with my toys and all the story lines I made then. The little cars made of cardboard. The water guns. And the good and bad toys. Toys are definitely the best gift a kid can get, which a video game can never give. This movie simply reinforces it.

So the toys are safe and together for infinity and beyond J Lets wait what is next in the adventure book in Woody and friends…

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-85889529334778922202010-10-22T22:43:00.005+05:302011-12-21T09:20:19.117+05:30Jhootha Hi Sahi - As I See It

Directed : Abbas Tyrewala

Music : A R Rahman

Starring : John Abraham, Pakhi, Raghu Ram, R Madhavan ( guest )

We have seen Jaane Tu Ya Na Jaane... and liked it. We heard the music of this movie Jhoota Hi Sahi and got a clue what this movie is about. Trust me, you will leave the theater content. Happy to watch a simple, cute movie, which entertained you, if not enlightened !

Nothing lies like true Love. The movie lives upto that tagline. The small lies one end upto save lives, his Love and how things get complicated and he ended up saying more and more lies. Will his story ends when the lady finds the truth and how they handle it is what the movie is about.

Sidharth ( Sid, played by John Abraham ) is a book keeper, who mistakenly ends up being a suicide helpline support. His supportive and friendly manners help a few and he was happy with his new role. Life was going smooth till he gets a call from Mishka ( Pakhi, who is the writer of the movie and the director's wife too! ). Sid saves her from ending her life and eventually lost himself to her! He becomes her friend on day and her mentor / saviour at night. Quite predictably he falls for her. She is expecting him to be true and faithful.. The way the truth cracked and the way it fall on them is nicely handled.

To add to it, the gang of friends. They are very different among themselves, and complimentary. Each of them has unique character and adds to the colour to the movie.

There are a few cool moments in the movie. Like the first calls Sid receives. Though he got angry by those anonymous calls and yell at them, it saves life! Yes, all they might need was someone to talk to and not finding any may take them to the extremes. It is easy to touch lives. Even without him realising it. The scenes where Sid picks the porn movies, makes Mishka rediscover her artist side, meeting Kabir when she finishes the sketch of the bridge, 'Mishka from the movie store' are good.

Motivation. The feeling that someone is there to appreciate our efforts. Someone stands for us. Someone to share life. That is what we needs from a friend and life. Even though with a few lies, it bridges hearts.

The whole movie has peppy youth feeling to it. Be it the dialogues ( short and crispy ), actors, dress, MUSIC. Rahman's music is very complimentary to the movie. Songs are written by the director himself. Check Cry Cry, Pam Pa Ra, Do Nishaniyan or Call Me Dil. The songs will stay on your lips for sometime.

John Abraham as Sid is awesome. He should stick to these 'acting roles' than hunk pin-up ones. He is lovable in the movie. His boy next door antics and down to earth character is definitely going to win him many hearts. Pakhi is passable. She definitely is not the one people will Love at the first sight. But as the movie progresses you might like her. May be a bubbly Genelia might have been a better choice. Others gave good support especially the gang of friends. Raghu of MTV Roadies fame shows his lighter side, and nicely, though Madhavan was terribly underused.

Like in the last movie, climax is hard to believe. In Jaane Tu... it was airport and here the bridge scene, cop, 'false alarm'. But the cinematic liberty is given.

Don't miss this. You will definitely like watching a light, youthful, musical.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-39473182710226230532010-10-11T10:24:00.003+05:302011-12-21T09:20:33.050+05:30Endhiran - As I See It

Directed : Shankar

Endhiran was not released, Endhiran was arrived! Along with it Indian cinema too ! If you think I went a bit too overboard or before laughing at that statement, go watch the movie. It will make you proud and sad at the same time ! Proud for an Indian movie being so rich in visuals and techniques and sad because the one thing that hinders Shankar from making something like Avatar or Matrix is the lack of money. He has ideas - brilliant ones, but to materialize it he needs bigger banner and wider audience. May be the Hollywood guy Vijay Amrithraj who made Jeans with him can sit with him for a pure Hollywood movie now !

The movie indeed is huge. The production, team, theme, music, location, costume, hype everything is rich. Interestingly, even the audience too, in Bangalore I never seen such a rush and excitement in the counter that too in the second week of release. The best part is it lived upto the expectation. It offered worth for every penny of the moviegoer that he left movies content.

Let us come to the movie. It is about a robotics scientist ( Vaseegaran ) and his invention - the humanoid with emotions. The first half deals with the raw Chitty ( cute name for the robo ! ) who struggles to fit in to the world. Though he looks human, the lack of emotions and understanding the virtues make him an outcast. Though his super powers help in disasters his lack of understanding values and ethics make his and the scientist's life tough. And the extreme of it was nicely conveyed in the fire rescue scene.

Vaseegaran, decides to fix it by adding emotion programs to Chitty. Result - a Robot which ( or who ) can think like human and emote like human too - whether it is anger, Love or revenge. Chitty smitten by Love was fun to watch. Robo dreaming about a girl in sleep and going any extent to get her kiss was fun… :)

Like any story the good things will not last long and the trouble and the way Vaseegaran handles it make the rest of the story. It is nicely told. The ways the robot clones or adapt to situations ( like charging from car batteries ) are beautifully conveyed. Ended with a message (!) of everyone born pure but the circumstances influence him right or wrong. Hhmmm… Point noted Shankar :)

Nothing about Robot will not complete with Rajnikant. Interestinlgy this is a new avatar of him. No, not the electronic avatar but the other one. He significantly downplays himself. The 'real' Rajni is limited to songs and other characters dialogues ( like Aiswarya when break up saying he can go his 'thani vazhi' ( lone way ) or in the song hey auto auto kaara, automatic-kaara, koottam koottam paaru unn autographukka and so on ). The 'real' Rajni not even fight bad. He throws dust in the eyes of a baddie and run for life! Man, that is so unreal of Rajni! The typical Rajni walk, laugh, talk everything is given to the Robo ( the scientist asks Robo to walk like him and when the Robo does the Rajni walk, the theater broke to cheer ). This movie will not happen without Rajni. Not just because only he can carry the role of properly, but only he can justify the huge budget and can get it repaid too. He is excellent, if he does that underplay in Kuselan, the fate of the movie might be different… !

The technical department of the movie is also done a great job. The sound, music, location, costume, choreography and the dancers - everything added to the awe. How the locations were beautiful and eye candy so was costume. Rajni was looking elegant and Aiswarya dashing. The costumes of the dancers, whether it was the Robo dress or the tribal ones, were rich and different.

A R Rahman's music… - The movie will be incomplete with it. Not just the great songs, but the background scores too. The songs may not be very impressive in the album, but once you watch the movie, you will see that, that is the only way it can be done and it is brilliant in the movie. Kudos to A R. No wonder Mani Ratnam or Shankar chooses him, nobody else can give music to the sound of dreams of these great storytellers.

Do you think whether all this are possible - the robot with emotions… may be one day it might come true. Remember, man's landing on moon was first suggested in a 'then sci-fi' novel. Just wait and watch.

The movie starts with the song 'Puthiya Manitha Bhoomikku Vaa…' ( Come to earth, the new human ). The newness Shankar kept until the end and that made it a paisa vasool entertainment.

If you think I went overboard praising the movie, that is because you haven't watched the movie yet ! Go watch it and you will know that I haven't said even half of the magic ! Let me summerise this with a few lines from the song Arima Arima.

Ivan Perai Sonnadhum, Perumai Sonnadhum Kadalum Kadalum Kai Thattum
Ivan Ulagam Thaandiya Uyaram Kondathil Nilavu Nilavu Thalai Muttum

(The moment his name or his praise is mentioned, the oceans gave him a stading ovation

He has reached such a height that his head touches the moon)

It was originally a Rajni anthem and now we can sing it about Shankar too :D

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-77377238884692966442010-09-27T12:11:00.003+05:302011-12-21T09:20:48.296+05:30Dabangg - As I See It
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: #741b47; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">
<div style="color: #741b47; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">That was it ! The hype before release and the news of breaking records from the day of its release - Dabangg got the curiosity of me ignited. And I must confess it didn't disappoint me either ! It lived upto the expectation and I was happy coming out of the theater. And surprisingly the 'mass film' satisfied the viewers in multiplex too. I mean when there was a scene in which Salman shows any heroism or gives out a punch dialogue, there was enough wah wah's and aaahhh..'s. ( The same story with Ice Age 3 too. I thought we will be the odd adults for the kid's movie, but majority of the audience were adults and they enjoyed the movie thoroughly and was letting the kid inside them show).

So what it got to beat the collection or entertainment value that 3 Idiots had ??? Only one answer - Salman. He looked Dabangg ( fearless ), stylish, lovable and surprisingly young. And to top it, his acting, body language and dialogue delivery looked matured. Whether it is the introducing fight scene or the lady crooning scene, his monkey mocking antics were out and the less spoken, precise police officer was there to see. A treat for Salman fans and for others a good entertainment.

The movie is about the fearless hero taking on the bad elements in the society his way all of his own, at the cost of his mom, fighting all odds with the step-father, step-brother to become successful and winning the lady he chose. The difference is in the presentation. The way Salman is presented and his antics. The signature Ray-Ban trick is fresh and lovable.

One more signature Salman moment is there in the movie - going shirtless !!! Though most of the time we see him either in uniform or dashing plain shirt and trousers ( even in songs ), in the climax fight to take on the villain he does go shirtless. But no whirling shirt or tricks with body. He needed to go shirtless because the villain does it and he has to prove that he got better physique than the villain !!!

Give it a cinematic liberty and you will like the Dabangg way of proposing and wedding! The police station scene where Salman offers a grand for making the lady smile is cute at least. Good to see Salman downplaying and he excels in this role.

One weak link may be the heroine. Sonakshi…. Hhmmm… I will say ok, both the look and acting ( all she got to show is some nakara and uninterested to Salman though ). Unlike Sonam Kapoor or Shruthi Hassan or other recent debutants, she got a dream-like debut with the movie. Let us see how her career shapes up.

The music department is another highlight of the movie. Salman's favorites Sajid-Wajid came up with some good songs. Mast Mast Nain, Munni Badnaam and Chori Kiya Re Jiya you will like to hum. The background music is different from normal mass action flicks. The music is always in background and is not shouting ! It never goes wild.

Paisa vasool movie. Do not miss it ( I am sure most of you would already have seen it ! ). Now all we have to do is to wait for the sequel ! Yes, discussion is going on.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-34354778601596882082010-08-12T17:59:00.010+05:302011-12-21T09:21:07.646+05:30Enthiran - As I Hear It ( Endhiran Music As I Hear It )

Update : After watching the movie, the way I hear the songs changed. Changed completely…. The songs are tailor made for the movie and it fits perfectly with it. The songs are not at all used as fillers but convey the story at that point. Whether it is the opening title track Puthiya Manitha ya the Chitty Dance Showcase, every song is with a reason. If the song has lyrics like, Neutron Electron Unn Neela Kannil Motham Ethanne, it is because that is the only way it can be. How else a scientist obsessed with his research sing… ;) I n the new light after the movie I am awestruck about the songs and Loved it more than ever….

Raavanan songs also were well woven to the story than a stand-alone album. No wonder great storytellers like Mani Ratnam and Shankar choose A R Rahman. Nobody else can do justice to the soundtrack like he does.

Though this site is mainly about movies, I guess our views about music also will be apt here. And we can not start with a bigger one than the magnum opus that is 'Enthiran'. Let us move to it, Enthiran As I Hear It...

The lavishness about the movie is obvious in the music too. Heavyweighters are there in credits. It can not get bigger. Rahman conducting the music, cream of singers ( lot of them too ) and veterans with the pen, our expectations are high. Whether it was justified, well, this is what I have for you.

Rahman got a new platform with the Human Robot movie and he has used it well. Though there is a batallian of singers there, nobody sound out of place. He has used them such a way that it will make us feel, this is the only way! A host of new sounds and blend them in a way only he can do is something you should look for. Saying that, I am giving you a hint not to look for poems in it. The lyrics sound shallow, way too shallow often.

Every moment you should keep in mind that this is a Rajnikant movie and the soundtrack will also be done for him. Use this for foot tapping music. And please do not judge the album at the first time. When you play it repeatedly, there is a good chance that you will appreciate the music. Let us see the songs one by one...

Puthiya Manidha
Sung by SP Balasubramaniam, AR Rahman and Khathija Rahman
Lyrics Vairamuthu
Ranjnikant needs an introduction song and here it is. The song start with robotic launching voices and the electronic voices ( including Rahman's ) do the rest. We can not stop appreciating SPB's magic. His voice has the power to make any song special.

Kadal Anukkal
Sung by Vijay Prakash and Shreya Ghoshal
Lyrics Vairamuthu
Tried to blend Love with electronics! The shallow lyrics are made up by inspiring music and Vijay and Shreya. Beat is soothing and if you pretend you won't understand Tamil, this song can make you happy. Why they need to add neutron, electron, Newton at odd places to kill the song. Rahman's talent and effort is teased here.

Irumbile Oru Idhaiyam
Sung by AR Rahman and Kash 'n Krissy
Lyrics Karky, Kash n' Krissy
Another techno-track! Which tries to find heart and Love in steel. Hats-off to Rahman and the new rapper. The rap is too long and irritating at times. But got everything to be a chart topper.

Chitti Dance Showcase
With voices of Pradeep Vijay, Pravin Mani and Yogi B
One track live up to the title. Nothing to expect and you will be happy to get more than your expectations !

Arima Arima
Sung by Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, Benny Dayal and Naresh Iyer
Lyrics Vairamuthu
Rajnikant Anthem. And in that perspective well done. Hariharan experimented a lot with this song and it gives it a special appeal.

Kilimanjaro
Sung by Javed Ali and Chinmayi
Lyrics Pa. Vijay
Use this as a dance number or the one to play loud in your car. Do not let the credit list excite you, Javed Ali and Chinmayi are wasted. And you can not blame Rahman for it. Kudos to Pa. Vijay to come with a song with this theme!

Boom Boom Robo Da
Sung by Yogi B, Keerthi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan and Tanvi Shah
Lyrics Karky
The album ends by reminding you that this indeed is a Rajnikant movie! Many singers have given their talent to this song. Let it pass. At times the female portion of the song reminds of Thigu Thigu from Anbe Aruyire.
Ten minds. A hundred voices. One man.”

Dear Mani Ratnam, but where is THE MAN? If I can be ruthless in criticizing, I would prefer to say “the hero wasn’t man enough.” (In the Hindi version…)

Abhishek irritates. As Raavan.

I grew up listening to Amma reading out stories from epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. I would choose Raavan over Rama any time, for I believe he is a man who followed his heart. A man of madness and devotion. After all, that is what a real man should be, NO? :)

Rama is not the epitome of righteousness. Raavan is certainly not wickedness incarnated. But on close reading, you will notice that they do sway between different poles of characters. One values love over everything else. The other underestimates the power of love for trust. It’s just my point of view. You have every right to disagree!

I always wondered why Raavan behaved like Raavan? His extraordinary discipline and tapasya is remarkable. He was overwhelmingly powerful. And the woman for whom he had a burning desire was his captive for over a year. Yet he never tried to violate her. NEVER. He visited her regularly and asked her consent to marry him. Every time, Sita declined. But there is NOT a single instance when Raavan misbehaved with her! I can’t help but say that it was so unimaginably good of him to behave this way.

I salute that brotherly brotherly affection of Raavan to avenge his sister Surpanakha, although I know it overruled the right and the wrong.

On a wild thought, I even imagined Raavan playing the role of Rama. I’m sure that he would never have allowed himself to be exiled. Never would Sita be unprotected and left alone! I’m SO DAMN SURE!

My views must be rebellious. But I think Raavan plays the role of a gentleman to the hilt. To quote Raavan : “Winning or losing... It depends on who's the fastest...”

If I were to believe that Mani Ratnam attempted to sketch a modern day Raavan, he failed miserably in his attempt (in the Hindi Version, Raavan. I haven’t seen the Tamil version yet. I’m sure it is way too better, as Vikram might fit into the role of Raavan than Abhishek). Abhishek Bacchan CAN NOT be Raavan. You need some one who is equally mad and devoting! You need a man of passion. Dear Mani Ratnam, NOTE THESE WORDS : MAN OF PASSION.

Honest feedback about the movie: Dazzling visuals…. Amazing cinematography by Santosh Sivan….It really takes some effort to forget the location! My picks are the fight sequence on the bridge and a few other scenes from the jungle…. Exquisite beauty of Indian forests…. rivers and waterfalls…. Wow! :) I found Mani Ratnam’s signature on a lot of frames. It was etched all over the screen!

Great music. Khili Re…. Thok De Killi…. :) Brilliant picturing.

Priya Mani is lovely. May be it is time she moves on from Paruthi veeran. She is way too talented to imitate her own self.

Aishwarya is still beautiful and is way better than Abhishek in acting! :)

Govinda, you came, you jumped around the trees, and you vanished in thin air. Why?

Vikram, I will forgive you for all your sins IF you continue to choose characters that befits you.

FINAL VERDICT: A great story with not-so-great dialogues. :( I left the theatre disappointed and frustrated. Although you did let me down in a big way, I still love you Mani Ratnam.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-26856994285739521852010-06-05T14:48:00.006+05:302011-12-21T09:21:45.140+05:30Karthik Calling Karthik - As I See It

I brought this movie at Planet M without much expectations, because of it's ill-fate at the box office. And it got added to the list of movies which were not fared well at box office but surprised me. Full paisa vasool.

The man Karthik, is an underdog. Though he was excellent in his studies, the company was not considering him good or even credited his hard work. One day he got insulted by the boss in front of all his colleagues including the girl he admired ( who never knew he was existed even after four years working together ! ). He felt it the end and decided to end his life.

Then the twist comes. He started getting calls from himself ! Interestingly the Kathik on phone is a more matured, smart guy with an attitude. He guides the 'normal' Karthik to win his dreams and make a complete make over for the guy. He wins his boss and the girl of his dreams. But when the girl finds about the ' caller ' Karthik and how she with the help of his psychiatrist tries to dig out the secrets forms the rest of the story.

We have seen many movies dealing with schizophrenia, split-personality, dual personality, hallucination etc. What I liked about this movie is the way the underdog Karthik transformed to the winner. He just followed the advice from the caller Karthik. And we know that it is himself. Then what does it mean...

There is a very powerful sub-conscious mind in every one of us. We usually ignores its voice or pretend like we are far smarter than it. Or at times, we will be forced to ignore it owes to our fears. We are very afraid that if we dare to stand on our feet and voice against the establishments like boss, colleague, system, it will ruin us, it will make our life difficult. In fact, once we overcome our inhibitions, and let our mind lead us, we can also be winner. The prize of overcoming the inhibitions will always be very sweet.

Look at the way Karthik handles his boss and landlord as per his adviser's directions... The over charging landlord became friendly and returned the extra money he charged Karthik. The boss who was always bullying and never give Karthik the credit he deserves or appreciate his hard and perfect work, realises his worth once he was fired and showed what he is capable of. Most of the time, when everything runs smooth people ignore to notice the hands making it perfect. Only when something went wrong the boss will look down to see what went wrong. Why should one wait for it. Why shouldn't we make the boss notice what we are doing and what is our worth... Never ever let your hard work go unnoticed to the inhibitions.

The imaginary world Karthik made was what making the real Karthik. He was guilty about something he never did. Every moment he was burning with it. And that prevents himself from becoming the real him. Once it was shown and he makes the effort to grow out of it, everything changes for good. That is important. When you know that what you are imagining is not the right thing and it is becoming a burden and ruining yourself we need to make that conscious effort to set things right. The things we imagine within our mind can be destroying as much it can be productive too.

The boy-girl chemistry is good. The girl, who when came to know that the boy has some psychological issues, stood by him and helped him make everything right. That is the kind of support we expect from our friends and spouse, right... In the beginning she was shown as a carefree girl, who enjoys cigarettes and parties. I don't understand why the girl has to light a cigarette to prove that she is cool ! Directors, please grow up.

Altogether, a good movie. It will not bore you and will give you some insight about your own mind too. Just take a look at yourself and listen to the inner voice who wants to do the things you always wanted to do. Shed the inhibitions and march towards the dream life... Forget the negativism shown in the movie. Never let your mind destroy you, but make it your guiding light.. to success..
The music is also good. Blends good with the movie. It is a clean cute movie with lots of laughter, fun, Love and a little bit thinking. In a line, story of a nonsense guy becoming serious and winner in life. But there is more to it...

The mother-son relation in the movie is touching. How many times we might have told mom, not to disturb me, leave me alone, do not touch my stuff, stop being English etc etc... ( I am sure if we won't, our mom will remember the count ;) ) And the mom always wants to be the son's friend, and tries too. Even when he is staying away she is worried about him and caring, by sending mangoes and all. She knows what he likes and she is there to make it.

We all want to be independent, try to do something new, become mature and serious about life, have a job which we enjoy, love and all. But how to get there, or even worse what exactly we want, we hardly give a thought. Try to find what we exactly wants to do, and the rest will follow.

The sea is a character in the movie. When it was said that the people love sea because whatever around them changes, it remains the same. When we lost in the changes or schedules, the sea is there, same and always calming. I always found sea fascinating. May be this was the reason...

Girls are girls - they make decisions fast and never change it. ;) Stubborn ! And it was cute to see the guy who never kept his bed clean helping his friend to make her house. Right from finding one to fill it, to paint it, arrange it. Even though the decision to choose that house was against his wish! That is friendship. Be with the other one, even though you are not agreeing, and you know that your friend trust it.

The way he celebrates her birthday - the bread-jam-cake ! Silly yet lovable.

What made this movie special is the way the story unfolds. A careless guy becoming serious. Being independent, got an aim. Yes, we have seen this in Lakshya earlier. But what made it different is that not only he gets serious by time, but also realises his dream. He does what he enjoys. And the best part of it, he got a company - a friend, who lovingly gives him side in every step. Don't you wish you got someone to guide you, correct you and more importantly inspire you. Whom you will call first to share your victory, happiness, anger, frustration.

I liked that part the most. Someone, so special to make every step count. Make life, every breath meaningful. Though it is not said in the movie, but being together and complements each other. I believe, only two totally different people can be together happy. And this movie supports it ;) The more the differences, the more fulfilling life is... So unexpected every day will be...

Afterall, who wants a serious life, let's spend it simple, fun.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-956994096971126872010-04-24T23:30:00.009+05:302011-12-21T09:22:19.722+05:30Rithu - As I See It

Get this first - DO NOT call it a cartoon. This is an animation. The story can be better told by computer generated sequences and so it is told that way. Because of the graphical content we never called Avatar or Matrix a cartoon. Give this genre the respect it deserve and call it an animation and not cartoon. Thank You...

This movie, just like any other Pixar movies, celebrates life, Love and friendship. The fantasy world that the story creates is beautiful. It is basically about the adventure and fun of living the life you always dream of, keeping the promise you gave to your loved ones, however tough it might seems to., and keeping the personal things between yourself - do cross your heart now :)

The best part of the movie is the first 10 minutes. You will feel like everything is told by then and what remains... The boy meet girl, liked each other, grow adult to get married, growing old romantically and loose one with time. IN TEN MINUTES... But it was magical. Especially when they came to know that they can not have kids, and the way both comfort and complement each other. You won't be alone filled with emotions by then ;)

The boy, Carl is not among the one who changes with time. He lived in his old fashioned home while all around him skyscrapers were coming up. It was when he started to get invitations to join the old age home that he realises his quest for adventure and it is the time to fulfil the promise he gave to the wife he always loved.

The girl, Ellie, always dreamed of going to the Paradise Falls in the lost world of South America ( South America is like America, but Sssooouuuutthh ! ). And making a home just above the falls. They always saved money to buy the tickets to there. ( Isn't it fun and fulfilling to have you and your soul mate sharing the same dream and work towards it...). The idea of Ellie's Adventure book is awesome. From childhood she fills it with the things she wants to do when she gets to the falls. In the end when Carl saw that the life she shared with him was her adventure, we all will be moved. If tears filled your eyes, it's ok. When you feel that you are the world to your spouse, what more you will need... Yes being with your Loved one is the greatest adventure...

What we miss is Ellie's Adventure Book. We plan life. But the plan is limited to the financial part of it. We all plan and work hard and save to secure our future, financially. But the silly little things we need to make it worth always misses... However childish or insane anybody will call my plans, I dream more of the silly things I want to do than securing my life financially. What is the point in planning all life and living not a moment of it enjoyingly. And when we start to live the life we want we will discover that it is the utmost happiness and there is more and more to explore and enjoy in life...

The boy and girl had one interest in common when they were kids, The Spirit of Adventure and it's showman . Both wants to grow up to be like him. And by the climax of the story the reappearance of him and his inventions ( like the dog mind reader ) and his specially trained dogs are very thoughtful. But deep inside he is someone who is addicted to his stardom and he will do anything to get his stardom back. The little boy who join Carl in his trip to Paradise Falls teaches us a few lesson of friendship, Love towards the nature and most importantly, holding on to the plan whatever may happen.

Enjoy the movie, plan something for yourself. Something you always want to do but was postponed thinking it may not be the right time for it, or what the world may think of it, or whatever the excuse you happily believed in. Start living the life you dream of. good Luck. Cross your heart ;)

' It is the end of my adventure. Now, go have your own.... I liked the movie, right from the title - Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaayaa... Will you come down ( for me ) from the sky... Wow... Do I need to tell more what the movie is about...

Yes, the movie is about Love. Romantic - the way Love always is... Silly, straight, complete, pure, crazy, with only one mantra in the mind - Love... The way it begins, it grows and all show the stupidly beautiful Love... And made me completely drowned in the movie...

When he meets the heroine for the first time, he knew that it was his lady. And the way he tried to woo her is really funny and real, and is very true... Me, you, everybody will do the same stupid things may be. Because the only thing in our mind is Love and we will do anything to get it.

There is a scene in which the hero was taken to police station because he was suspected for cancelling the heroine's marriage. He and his friend is at the station, that too at a place completely strange to them, down to the language. They were at the verge of getting arrested or being beaten. Still, the hero was grinning from ear to ear. When asked he was innocently telling his friend, ' can't believe the marriage got cancelled !'.... That's Love... Even at the point of life and death, he has only her in his mind... And that makes the movie magical, Love magical...

I was told that it is difficult to read girls. Especially their NO's. Here too things are not different. The girl, though liked the guy, always tells that she has no feeling towards him. And always giving the reasons why they should not fall in Love. She got reasons, but she was too afraid to express her true feelings... And when she does and the way they Love was nicely taken. Dreaming, but feet firm on ground.

Whoever has told that this generation has lost morale, and gives no importance to values, tradition or family, should watch this. If anything goes wrong between the two, it only because of the elders holding too much about the things even they are not sure of. Come on, it's life and it should be lived on our taste, our decision. The community, people and the others barriers are there only for one reason - to make you live in their codes and make you give a wrong kind of security, which it never provides in fact. Do you think any lover in the last generation will tell ' when she needs to see either the parents or the lover sad, she prefers it should not be the parents...' Last generation celebrated the story of lovers who will leave the family to be with lover and that was the victory of Love. Don't tell this to this generation. They know how big family is to them.

The way the hero handles the difficult situation also makes sense and the importance the youth gives to their life. He has not committed suicide, no drug, alcohol or any other things that may harm him. He instead focus on his life and career. He had a dream he wanted to fulfil with her by his side. Though by circumstances, she was not able to do her part. Still he hangs on to his dream and made it true. And that too with her support, her motivation, in his dream. When he was telling about the girl he found after breaking up with the heroine, and how she was giving him strength, it was touching. When we knew that he was talking about the same girl and they talk on dreams, wow.... That is Love... Which will never leave our side, which will sail us through any hardship...

For all the people out there who likes to watch simple, clean story which you can relate to, go watch this movie. And please do not judge it by Silambarasan. He is not little super star any more. He is matured to be the young super star and it shows. All he was lacking was a good director and Gauthm Menon is great in the way he tell stories. OK, let me make it clear, he cries in the movie... So don't make your prejudice mind take the decision, anyway you are of this generation and we never take decisions before we know the real thing, do we...

The songs, camera is all great. Watch the background score. The silly Love story is told with Silly pop music in the first half. It was funny, when the girl and boy decided to be friends ' Mustafa Mustafa' is playing, and when the girl is in front of him and he can't think of being friend with her 'you are driving me crazy' playing in background, that all was fun and giving he right ambiance for the movie. My favorite songs are Mannippaya, Hosanna and Omanappenne.

Watch the movie. Revive your Love. You can see yourself on screen. It's worth taking that dream ride once again...
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427986980376621476.post-74508179375853199892010-03-19T19:12:00.007+05:302011-12-21T09:23:03.625+05:30Love Aaj Kal – As I See It

“Es film ki ek nayi angle hai!” (= This movie has got a new or rather different angle!)

The incurable-dreamer-of-love in me enjoyed the movie, despite the criticism that preceded it. I’m not here to debate on what is Indian and what is Western when it comes to attitudes or lifestyle. I also have no intentions whatsoever to preach what morality or infidelity is. Instead, I attempt to ponder on why we are what we are portrayed as, in this movie!

We live in a world of choices. And thankfully our generation is bold enough to choose what suits us best at any given point in time. ‘Right’ and ‘Wrong’ are relative terms these days. Unlike our parents, we are more rebellious. We are willing to experiment with life! You will find a rebel and a conservative in every youngster these days. The one who knows where to draw the line when it comes to having fun in life, wins the game of life! And that is one trick we all have to master.

(Observation from the movie): Our elders think that we only have a brain, not a heart. They are appalled at the numerous options that we have in today’s life. They say, there were more of compulsions and less of options in their days. But if I get into a debate here, both of us will go on arguing in support of options and compulsions. Hence I skip the idea.

There is more to life than options or choices. It’s about remaining open and experimentative. Always being ready to walk the path that we have never walked before. Life is all about experiences!

We should be able to let go of things, as life changes, every second! And we have to change along. Clinging to the past, is so passé! :-) Give no space to regrets ever!

We define our lives. We choose our friends. We set our priorities for life. Unlike our elders, we are more independent. We refuse to be ‘limited’! For us, the choice that feels right, good and practical at any point in life is the best choice! And this is where heuristic rule comes into play. Sadly, we are being misinterpreted for our actions always. What we intend to do is just to keep ourselves happy! Is that too much to ask for? All the same, we never stop being accountable for our actions.

I believe that being responsible for my own mistakes makes me a better and real person. I wouldn’t hesitate to correct my mistakes every time I realise that I’ve made one! Be it in love or life. I’m bold enough to stand up for what I want in life. This is exactly why I could relate to Meera Pundit in this movie! And I bet there are so many of you, who do the same.

Jaivardhan Singh thought that he can move on with life, ignoring the love of his life. His priorities were supposedly different. But, with time, he realised that his heart is where his love is! No amount of luxury can satisfy your heart if it misses true love!

Even our generation understands ‘love’ in its real sense. There are a lot of us who never get lost in love. We make choices and compromises for that love, which will keep us happy forever. We know that love is one of the most precious jewels and the struggle to achieve it is going to be very very hard. We don’t let our love become a power-struggle or politics. For a lot of us, love is inspiration and a positive strength.

Is it not wonderful to wait for that ‘someone special’, who is capable of making you happy? All it takes to be successful in love is to: 1) Be patient. 2) Believe in your love. 3) Cherish it forever. 4) Live in the moment. Hey, I never said it is easy! :P

You will love this movie, if both life and love is your passion! :)

P.S: Ignore the glitches: Hinglish dialogues, Dipika’s dialogue delivery (You Prrrrrrromise?) and a few more. It's been a while this movie was released and we watched it. It was not in my movies-to-watch-at-theater list. Not because I was prejudice that it will not be worth, but because I know that it was a movie I will watch over again, so I wanted to get it on DVD, which will be good for repeated watch. When everyone of my friends has watched it and were happy with it, every newspaper and website giving it 5 star ratings, it was tough to resist the temptation. Even after my sister called me to say how much she enjoyed it ( it was the first Hindi movie she ever watched at theater ) I hold on. I was in the queue to buy ticket for Ishqiya when my Jeeju called me to say that he and my sister is going to watch it for the second time. Enough ! I bought the overpriced 3 Idiots ticket instead of Ishqiya. And no regrets about it....

There was more reason to enjoy the movie than it being funny, reminded about the college days, against the kind of studying and learning system of today, making the youngsters realize how silly they take their life or death… The reason was simple - it celebrates the message of living live as you want to... Enjoy every moment of it completely. If the world is not with you for your reason, don't loose heart. Because it is the way life needs to be and sooner or later the world will be with you, the way you want.

The world will be always will be reluctant to change. Will make us think like them and will try every bit to make us believe that it is the right thing. And will never give our way a chance or a moment to think, if not admit that others can be right too.

Only in this generation one can see friends like that in the movie. So thick, so strong. Each of the 3 were different, but still there was something which made them hang on to... Give everything for each other. Be it money, help, risk, time even thoughts. If you can't think of such friendship, it never means that it never exists. Or can happen only in films. Your life will be just like the way you make it to be. Your friendship too....

Haa, there were some points which were out of place like the over stretched climax. Or the family story of Raju and Farhan. In the end everyone appreciate the new view about education and more importantly LIFE... The way uniform gives the boy admission. But its ok, this is a movie man...

The songs were not great on CD, but on movie it was perfect. Even the background score was fantastic. If listen carefully you will see that it is more fun. The opera, the baarath band when Piya elopes etc...

The producers had done their homework well. The mood is very young and up-to-date. The induction motor joke, the use of rings in every finger, many Rakshas in wrist etc etc. no wonder the youth celebrated the movie...

Altogether it was perfect. More than a funny movie, it tells us something... Asking us to think, to
change our perspective, cut the strings we ourselves attached to us. Kudos to the makers... Did I say that it made my heart so full that it overflow through my eyes at times….

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
